The Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) is the leading non-governmental organization for Malaysia’s tourism sector. As of April 2026, the association is at its most active phase in a decade, spearheading the private sector’s contribution to Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (VMY2026).
1. Organization Profile & Leadership
Founded in 1975, MATTA represents over 3,100 members, including travel agencies, tour operators, and transport providers.
- Current President: Nigel Wong (as of April 2026).
- Core Mission: To facilitate the growth of the travel industry through advocacy, professional development, and high-profile consumer events.
2. Key 2026 Initiatives
The “TRUST” Framework
Launched in early 2026, the TRUST: Powered by MATTA initiative is a new professional standard designed to combat “scam” travel packages (particularly in the Umrah and luxury sectors). It ensures:
- Accountability: Transparent reporting and standardized service contracts.
- Vetting: Only “TRUST-certified” members can participate in premier zones of the MATTA Fair.
The MESTI Initiative
The MATTA Eco-Sustainable Tourism Initiative (MESTI) focuses on shifting Malaysia’s tourism towards “Green” travel. It highlights wildlife conservation, marine protection, and indigenous cultural preservation as core components of modern Malaysian tour packages.
3. The MATTA Fair (April 2026)
The current National MATTA Fair (April 3–5, 2026) at MITEC, Kuala Lumpur, has set new records:
- Scale: Spanning 40,820 square meters across 10 halls.
- Exhibitors: 2,043 booths from 330 organizations.
- Featured Destination: Johor has been crowned “Malaysia’s Favourite Destination” for this edition, focusing on “Visit Johor Year 2026.”
- Aviation Partner: Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) has its largest presence ever, featuring a 46,000 sq. ft. “MAG Arena.”
| Event | Date (2026) | Venue |
| National MATTA Fair (KL) | 3 – 5 April | MITEC, Kuala Lumpur |
| MATTA Fair Johor Bahru | 10 – 12 April | Austin International Convention Centre |
| MATTA Fair Sabah | 17 – 19 April | Sabah International Convention Centre |
| MATTA Fair Penang | 25 April | Penang Waterfront Convention Centre |
4. Current Advocacy & Challenges
MATTA is currently in high-level negotiations with the Malaysian government regarding two critical issues:
- Diesel Subsidies: The association is calling for a 3,500-litre monthly subsidized diesel quota for tour bus operators. Without this, MATTA warns that tour prices could rise by up to 80%, potentially hurting VMY2026 arrival targets.
- Regulatory Power: MATTA is advocating for the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) to regain full regulatory control over tourism vehicles to ensure safety and quality standards are uniform across the country.
5. Strategic Importance for 2026
As Malaysia aims for 35.6 million tourist arrivals in 2026, MATTA serves as the primary “engine room” for the industry. By coordinating international sales missions (notably in India and China) and organizing the nation’s largest travel fairs, the organization remains the gatekeeper for both domestic and inbound tourism growth.
This video provides a glimpse into the scale of the MATTA Membership Summit and the debut of the TRUST initiative that defines the organization’s current 2026 strategy.
