AirAsia X Launches First European Route with Direct Flights from Kuala Lumpur to Istanbul
This development positions Istanbul as a vital gateway linking Southeast Asia to Europe, offering travellers seamless connectivity across continents. Known as the only city in the world built on two continents, Istanbul provides visitors with a unique blend of history, culture, and modern vibrancy.

Strategic Move in AAX’s Global Growth
Benyamin Ismail, CEO of AirAsia X, highlighted the importance of the new route:
“Istanbul has always been a dream destination for many of our guests, and its launch marks another proud moment in our journey to rebuild stronger than ever. As the only city in the world built on two continents, Istanbul perfectly captures our vision to bridge Asia and beyond through affordable, medium-haul travel.”
The addition of Istanbul strengthens AAX’s medium-haul network and complements its recent expansion into Central Asia. The airline will operate from SAW Airport, which connects to over 117 international and 40 domestic destinations, allowing travellers greater flexibility for onward journeys.
Benefits for Travellers and Communities
The new service not only enhances connectivity but also introduces the Umrah Plus Istanbul package via ikhlas.com, the Islamic lifestyle arm of Capital A, enabling Muslim travellers to combine their pilgrimage with a cultural stopover in Türkiye.
Passengers can also enjoy the airline’s Fly-Thru service, offering smooth connections from Istanbul to destinations such as Indonesia, Australia, Singapore, China, and Thailand without the need for baggage recheck.
H.E. Emir Salim Yüksel, Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to Malaysia, welcomed the new development, stating:
“This new connection between Kuala Lumpur and Istanbul is a tangible step in strengthening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Malaysia and Türkiye. It will not only boost tourism flows, but also expand business links, foster industry collaboration, and open new pathways for education, innovation and people-to-people engagement.”
