Introduction

The Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest) has grown into Malaysiaโ€™s premier film festival, celebrated annually every July. Over eight exciting days, MIFFest opens its doors to audiences from around the world, inviting them to watch, feel, and celebrate the magic of cinema.

MIFFest embraces emerging talents, experimental works, auteurs, and timeless classics, fostering an inclusive space for diverse voices and storytelling. Guided by the spirit of โ€œtogetherness,โ€ the festival extends beyond cinema to build partnerships and a sustainable ecosystem where stories are cherished and shared. MIFFest warmly invites everyone to experience the profound power of cinema and the passions it brings to life.


Festival Date

The 9th Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest 2026) will take place from 18 โ€“ 25 July 2026 in the vibrant city of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.


Entry Fees

MIFFest does not require any submission fee for any category.


Submission Deadline

All film submissions were required by Friday, 6 February 2026, 11.59pm (GMT+8). Submissions received after the deadline were not accepted.


Eligibility

Feature Competition (New Directors)

Open to directors with three or fewer narrative feature films, including the submitted work. Filmmakers from any country and in any language were eligible. This category highlights the next generation of cinematic visionaries and emerging storytellers.

Feature Non-Competition

Open to all new narrative feature films from aspiring filmmakers worldwide, regardless of language, genre, or country of origin.


Film Eligibility

  • Films must be completed in 2025 or 2026.
  • Minimum running time: 60 minutes (including opening and end credits).
  • Minimum premiere requirement: Malaysian Premiere (Malaysian films are exempt).
  • Films must include English subtitles; other languages optional.
  • Accepted screening formats: DCP, or in exceptional cases, video files (.mov or .mp4).

Submission Requirements

  • Complete the Online Submission Form on the MIFFest website.
  • Provide a secure online screener link (e.g., Vimeo) with password access.
  • Screener link/password must remain valid until 31 May 2026. Any updates must be communicated promptly to programme@miffest.com.my.
  • Selected film details, credits, and press materials may be published with the entrantโ€™s consent.

Selection and Notification

  • MIFFest reviews all eligible submissions; submission does not guarantee selection.
  • Selection is at the sole discretion of MIFFest, and all decisions are final.
  • Selected entrants are notified on a rolling basis. Accurate contact details are essential.
  • Once selected, films cannot be withdrawn from the festival program.

Technical and Screening Requirements

  • Selected films must provide a DCP, E-DCP, or approved digital screening file.
  • Final screening copy must match the submission screener unless approved otherwise.
  • MIFFest may reject screening materials that fail technical standards.
  • Entrants cover shipping costs for screening materials; MIFFest covers return shipment within three weeks after the festival.

Programming and Publicity

  • Screening schedules, venues, and times are determined solely by MIFFest.
  • Synopses, stills, and trailers may be used for festival publications, press materials, and promotional campaigns.
  • Selected filmmakers must provide publicity materials within one week of notification.
  • Filmmakers are encouraged to participate in Q&A sessions and press events.

Screening Rights

  • Submission grants MIFFest non-exclusive rights to screen the film.
  • Filmmakers retain full copyright ownership of their work.

Copyright Indemnity

Entrants must secure all rights for materials used in their films, including music, images, and archival footage. Filmmakers shall indemnify MIFFest against any claims or legal actions arising from copyright issues.
