Semenggoh Wildlife Centre – Meet the Gentle Giants of Borneo

The Semenggoh Wildlife Centre, located about 24 km from Kuching, is one of Malaysia’s three orangutan rehabilitation centres. Established in 1975, it was created to care for wild animals rescued from illegal captivity or those found injured in the rainforest. Over the decades, many orangutans have been rehabilitated and released into the 653-hectare Semenggoh Nature Reserve, where they now live freely in the wild.

A visit to Semenggoh Wildlife Centre is a once-in-a-lifetime experience — a chances to see semi-wild orangutans freely roaming. Semenggoh Wildlife Centre is open almost every day of the year, rain or shine. There are twice daily feedings at 9 am (open 8am-10am) and 3 pm (open 1pm-4pm).

Today, more than 20 orangutans inhabit this protected forest. Some are fully wild, while others occasionally return to the feeding area. Though the rehabilitation work has moved to Matang Wildlife Centre, Semenggoh remains one of the best places in Sarawak to observe orangutans up close in their natural environment.

🌿 Visiting Semenggoh

The highlight of visiting Semenggoh is the orangutan feeding sessions, which take place twice daily — at 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM.

Visitors are encouraged to arrive early, as orangutans sometimes appear before feeding time near the headquarters (HQ). Before the session begins, park rangers provide a short safety briefing and an introduction about the orangutans.

Rangers then lead visitors along a jungle trail to the feeding platform, where they call out to the orangutans by name. The primates are fed a variety of fruits such as bananas, papayas, coconuts, pineapples, and sometimes even boiled eggs.

Each encounter is different — you may see one or two orangutans, or sometimes several individuals including mothers with babies. During the fruiting season, however, orangutans may not appear, as they prefer foraging naturally in the forest.

🎥 Video Experience

Visitors can witness breathtaking moments of orangutans during feeding time — mothers cradling their young, juveniles swinging through trees, or even the dominant male Ritchie, a local legend at Semenggoh.

What to Expect

During the feeding sessions, rangers bring food and call out the orangutans by name. These orangutans are semi-wild — they live freely in the forest and only return when food in the wild is scarce.

The centre’s star residents include:

  • Ritchie – The dominant alpha male.
  • Selina & Annuar – Mother and child pair often seen near the platform.

On lucky days, you may see multiple orangutans swinging through the canopy, feeding, or nurturing their young.

🦺 Safety Tips:

  • Maintain a safe distance (at least 10 meters).
  • Never feed or touch the orangutans.
  • Keep quiet and follow ranger instructions at all times.
