Begin your adventure at the cool highlands of Gunung Alab, searching for rare montane birds before continuing to Inobong for lowland forest species. Spend the second day exploring the rich birdlife of Inobong Substation, home to colorful kingfishers, trogons, and endemic magpies. On the final day, journey to Sugud Forest Reserve for one last immersive birding session, where elusive species such as the Malaysian Rail Babbler and Red-bearded Bee-eater await amidst the pristine Bornean jungle.

Itineraries

Day 1

Highland Endemics at Gunung Alab

Your birding adventure begins with an 8:00 AM hotel pick-up from Kota Kinabalu. Travel by 4WD into the cool mountain forests of Gunung Alab in Tambunan, one of Sabah’s best birdwatching locations for montane species. Spend the day exploring forest trails and the Gunung Alab Restaurant Bird Hide while searching for remarkable birds such as the Crimson-headed Partridge, Red-breasted Partridge, Golden-naped Barbet, Mountain Barbet, and Gray-throated Babbler. In the evening, transfer to Inobong, Penampang for an overnight stay at Sinurambi Cottage Rental surrounded by scenic rainforest landscapes.

Day 2

Lowland Endemics at Inobong Substation

After breakfast, continue your birdwatching journey at the Inobong Substation, a fantastic lowland forest habitat rich in endemic birdlife. Enjoy a full day of guided birding while observing species including the Banded Kingfisher, White-fronted Falconet, Scarlet-rumped Trogon, Yellow-bellied Prinia, and the striking Bornean Black Magpie. The peaceful rainforest environment also offers opportunities to encounter butterflies, insects, and other wildlife native to Borneo. Return to Sinurambi Cottage Rental for another relaxing overnight stay.

Day 3

Birdwatching at Sugud Forest Reserve

Following breakfast and check-out, travel to the Sugud Firewood Reserved Forest for your final birding session. This lowland rainforest reserve is renowned for its incredible diversity of endemic and migratory birds. Keep your binoculars ready for sightings of the elusive Malaysian Rail Babbler, Crested Partridge, Red-bearded Bee-eater, Blyth’s Paradise Flycatcher, and Asian Fairy Bluebird. After a rewarding day immersed in Borneo’s wilderness, return to Kota Kinabalu where you will be dropped off at your hotel or the airport in the late afternoon.
