Announcement by BMKG South Sumatra
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) of South Sumatra Province (Sumsel) has officially announced the coming of this rare celestial event.
According to Wandayantolis, head of BMKG South Sumatra, the total lunar eclipse will occur on the night of Sunday, September 7, 2025, continuing into the early hours of Monday, September 8, 2025.
“The public will be able to witness this total lunar eclipse, also known as the blood moon, starting late Sunday night until early Monday morning,” Wandayantolis told reporters in Palembang on Saturday, as reported by @antaranewscom.
Peak of the Eclipse
At its maximum phase, the Moon will turn a striking red color due to sunlight bending through Earth’s atmosphere and scattering shorter wavelengths, allowing only the reddish tones to reach the lunar surface.
- Western Indonesia (Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan): Peak expected at 1:11 a.m. (WIB) on September 8, 2025.
- Other regions of Indonesia: The timing will differ slightly depending on location, but visibility will be excellent nationwide.
Significance of the Event
This eclipse belongs to Saros cycle 128, and it is the 41st of 71 eclipses in the series. With a totality lasting over 82 minutes, it will be a long and deeply visible eclipse, making it a must-watch event for sky enthusiasts across Indonesia and beyond.
Tip for Viewing: No special equipment is needed, though binoculars or a telescope will enhance the experience. For the best view, find a dark, open area away from city lights.
Quick Tip for Stargazers in Malaysia: Head to locations like Langkawi Sky Bridge, Kundasang (Sabah), Fraser’s Hill, or Taman Negara for darker skies and a clearer Blood Moon view.
