Japanese oil and energy giant ENEOS Holdings is set to acquire the Southeast Asian downstream fuel business of Chevron in a massive regional transaction reportedly valued at approximately RM8.5 billion.
The acquisition will eventually place more than 450 Caltex petrol stations across Malaysia under ENEOS ownership, making it one of the most significant fuel retail deals in Southeast Asia in recent years.
The agreement also covers Chevron’s operations in Singapore, Thailand, and Australia, further strengthening ENEOS’ presence in fast-growing regional energy markets.
ENEOS Expands Beyond Japan
The acquisition highlights ENEOS’ strategy to expand outside Japan amid changing fuel consumption patterns in its domestic market.
Japan’s fuel demand has been gradually slowing due to:
- Aging population trends
- Increasing electric vehicle adoption
- Greater fuel efficiency
- Reduced long-term gasoline consumption
In contrast, Southeast Asia continues to experience strong growth in fuel and mobility demand thanks to:

Despite the ownership transition, ENEOS is expected to retain the well-known Caltex branding across Southeast Asia.
The company reportedly sees strong value in the Caltex name, which has built decades of recognition among motorists throughout the region.
For customers in Malaysia, this means there are unlikely to be immediate changes to:

- Fuel products
- Convenience stores
- Existing services
However, industry experts expect ENEOS may gradually introduce its own technologies, lubricant products, and digital systems over time.

Malaysia’s petrol station industry remains one of Southeast Asia’s most competitive energy markets, with major players including:

The addition of ENEOS into the regional landscape could potentially increase competition in areas such as:

Deal Expected to Complete in 2027
Reports indicate ENEOS and Chevron signed the acquisition agreement on 14 May 2026.
However, the transaction still requires regulatory approvals from several countries before the takeover can officially be finalised.
The full transition process is expected to conclude sometime in 2027.
